How many fire safety assistants do you need?
ASR A2.2 gives a guideline of 5 percent of employees. With increased fire risk, many visitors or shift work it can be more, and there must be enough of them on site during holidays and sick leave too. Typical participants:
- Staff from every shift and every part of the building
- Warehouse, workshop and production
- Office, administration and reception
- Care, nurseries, schools and retail
- Safety officers and first aiders
Legal basis
§ 10 ArbSchG (German Occupational Safety and Health Act) requires employers to name employees who take on firefighting tasks. ASR A2.2, the technical rule for workplaces, specifies how many are needed and what they should be able to do.
DGUV Information 205-023 describes the training: basics of fire protection, fire safety organisation at work, how fire extinguishers work and are used, and a practical extinguishing exercise.
Fire safety assistants do not replace the fire brigade. Their job is to put out incipient fires where this can be done safely, warn colleagues and support evacuation.
What the training covers
The theory is deliberately compact. The important part happens outside: every participant puts out a fire themselves.

Completion
What matters is that every participant has done the extinguishing exercise themselves. Afterwards everyone gets the fire safety assistant certificate in the app, and you get all certificates as PDFs in the portal.
How long is the training valid?
A refresher every 3 to 5 years is recommended, plus the annual instruction at work. In the portal you have the records of all fire safety assistants and quickly see who was trained when.

How often must the training be repeated?
A refresher every 3 to 5 years is recommended. Independently of that, fire safety assistants are instructed every year like all employees.
Where does the extinguishing exercise take place?
In-house on a clear outdoor area at your site, otherwise with us in Cologne. We agree with you beforehand where it can take place and whether anyone should be informed.
Is a first aider automatically a fire safety assistant?
No, these are two separate roles with separate training. One person can do both, though.
Can office staff take part?
Yes, that is often where fire safety assistants are missing. The training is the same for all departments.
