Who needs a MEWP licence?

Anyone who operates a mobile elevating work platform on their own, whether truck-mounted, tracked or self-propelled. The need often comes up suddenly, for example when a platform is hired for a job; many rental companies ask for proof at handover. Typical participants:

  • Electricians, fitters and building services technicians
  • Painters, facade and window cleaners
  • Roofers, carpenters and metalworkers
  • Facility management and maintenance
  • Exhibition and event crews, warehouse operations

What the MEWP training covers

The theory explains why platforms tip over. In practice every participant works on the platform until outriggers, travel and emergency lowering are second nature.

Theory

  • Platform groups and types: vertical (group A) and boom (group B)
  • Stability, ground conditions, outriggers and spreader plates
  • Wind loads, limits and weather
  • Overhead lines, crush points and the catapult effect
  • Fall protection in the basket
  • Rescue from height and emergency lowering

Practice

  • Daily check before use
  • Setting up, outriggers and levelling
  • Driving and positioning near obstacles
  • Working at height wearing a harness
  • Operating emergency lowering from the ground

Exam

Written theory exam and practical test on the platform. After passing, the operator card is in the app with the platform type tested on. The certificate is a PDF in the company portal.

Validity and annual instruction

The operator card has no statutory expiry date. Instruction must be repeated at least yearly, plus familiarisation on every new platform before first use. You book the annual instruction with us on site; online instruction for MEWPs is coming to the app soon.

FAQ · MEWP licence

Good to know.

Does the licence cover scissor and boom lifts alike?

Training and exam take place on the platform types you use; the card states which ones. If a different machine is added later, the operator is familiarised with it before first use.

Do we need a truck driving licence for truck-mounted platforms?

Driving on public roads requires the driving licence that matches the vehicle weight. That is separate from the operator card, which covers working with the platform.

Must a harness be worn in the basket?

On boom lifts (telescopic and articulating), yes, as a restraint on the anchor point in the basket. On scissor lifts the guardrail usually protects, unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. In training, every participant puts on the harness themselves.

Who gets a person down in an emergency?

For every job it must be clear how a person gets down in an emergency. At least one instructed person on the ground should be able to operate emergency lowering. We practise this too.

Can we train on hired platforms?

Yes. Hire the platform to your site for the training day and we train on it. Tell us the type in your enquiry and we tailor theory and practice to it.
