Who needs a forklift licence?

Anyone who drives a forklift with a driver’s seat or stand at work. That includes temps, agency staff and colleagues who only move the odd pallet. Typical participants:

  • Warehouse and logistics staff
  • Production, goods-in and shipping teams
  • Trade and construction firms with their own forklift in the yard
  • New starters and career changers without experience
  • Drivers whose old certificate can no longer be found

Legal basis

Under DGUV Vorschrift 68 § 7 you may only assign people to drive a forklift who are at least 18, suitable, trained and have proven their ability. The assignment is given in writing.

DGUV Grundsatz 308-001 describes what the training looks like: general training with theory and practice, an exam and then familiarisation with the specific truck at your site. In-house, we train directly on your trucks and your routes.

After an accident the Berufsgenossenschaft (statutory accident insurer) asks for training, written assignment and the last safety instruction. Training and instruction records are in the company portal; the written assignment is issued by you as the employer.

What the forklift training covers

One day, clearly split: theory first, then practice on the truck, the exam at the end.

Theory

  • Legal basics, duties of driver and employer
  • Design, drive types and safety devices
  • Stability, centre of gravity and reading the load chart
  • Picking up loads and attachments
  • Traffic routes, pedestrians, ramps and slopes
  • Pre-use check, charging and refuelling (battery, gas, diesel)

Practice

  • Pre-use check on the truck
  • Driving forwards and in reverse, bends and tight spots
  • Picking up, setting down and stacking pallets
  • Racking work at different heights
  • Parking and securing the forklift

Exam

At the end of the day there is a written theory exam and a practical driving test. Whoever passes has the licence in the app the same day, and you get the certificate as a PDF in the portal. Whoever fails hears straight away why; we agree a retake with you.

Validity and annual instruction

The forklift licence has no fixed expiry date. Safety instruction at least once a year is mandatory, though (§ 12 ArbSchG, DGUV Vorschrift 1 § 4). You book the instruction with us on site, at your premises or in Cologne. Online instruction with video and questionnaire is coming to the app soon. The portal shows who is due when.

In-house at your site

We come to you and train on your forklifts, in your warehouse, on your routes. You need a room for the theory, a forklift ready for use and a clear practice area with a few pallets.

In Cologne

For individual employees or small groups, buy seats in our open sessions in Cologne, Butzweilerstraße. All dates are listed in the app.

Group size

Group size depends on the number of trucks, because every participant needs enough time at the controls. Larger teams are split into several groups or days.

FAQ · Forklift licence

Good to know.

Does one forklift licence cover every truck on site?

It covers forklifts with a driver’s seat or stand. Reach trucks and high-rack stackers need an additional qualification on top. Before first use of a new truck, you also familiarise the driver with that exact truck.

Do staff need a licence for pallet trucks or pedestrian stackers?

Pedestrian-controlled trucks have lower requirements than forklifts, but operators still need to be instructed and assigned. We can deliver that instruction on site; online instruction for pedestrian trucks is coming to the app soon.

From what age may employees drive a forklift?

Independently from 18. Younger apprentices may drive under supervision where their training requires it.

What about employees who already have a licence?

They add their licence in the app as an external record and are instructed every year like everyone else. Whether an old certificate is sufficient is your decision as the employer; we are happy to tell you what to look out for.

Do you train in English or other languages?

Yes, we train in several languages. Tell us in your enquiry which languages your team speaks and we plan the day accordingly.
